Creating MySQL User Account (2 replies)

Hello everyone,

I am new to MySQL and I am having trouble creating a user account. I am using a textbook called Internet & World Wide Web, 5e by Deitel. The book instructed me to download XAMPP and to create a MySQL user account.

It says that to create a user account, I must enter "mysql -h localhost -u root" in a command prompt but when I do, the command prompt says,
" 'mysql' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file". How would I go about fixing this problem?

Also, I was able to gain access to PHP My Admin and create a user account there. Is the account I created in PHP My Admin a PHP user account or a MySQL user account? If it's a MySQL account, then I believe I wouldn't need to go the command prompt route since I have already created a user account.

And lastly (sorry this post is soo long), I also changed the Path in the Systems Variables Settings. I found the Path of the MySQL folder (from the inside of the XAMPP folder) and added it to the Path in the Environment Variables section and the command prompt still returns the same error.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I've been stuck on this issue for more than a few hours.

changing net-retry-count (no replies)

I notice that records included in transactions where a client fails to commit or rollback because of connection loss are locked for 10 minutes.

net_retry_count = 10 and net_write_timeout = 60. I'm assuming that these two parameters explain the 10 minute lock time - is this correct ?

I'd like to reduce this to 1 minute and so set net_retry_count to 0. What are the implications of doing this, if any ? The Db is used solely for serving data to ODBC connected applications.

Thanks.

The server quit without updating PID file (1 reply)

Hi,

I've installed MySQL 5.6.14 to two Redhat Linux Enterprise 6 server. I can start both server with "service mysql start" after installation. The default datadir is in /var/lib/mysql.

I want to move my database to /opt/mysql/data, so I used mysql_install_db to create a database in that directory with --user=mysql. On one of my RLE6 server, I am able to use the database in the new location with "servce mysql start" by pointing the datadir to /opt/mysql/data; but on the other RLE6 server, I get the "The server quit without updating PID file" error from "service mysql start", but I can start MySQL with 'mysqld_safe --datadir=/opt/mysql/data --pid-file=/opt/mysql/data/mysql.pid'.

I do not see problem with user/group permission on /opt/mysql/data.

Using MYSQL from another server (1 reply)

I have been using MYSQL 5.5.23 for quite a period of time very successfully using it as a local host on a Windows 2008R2 server software and it has worked out very well and bullet proof.. However, I need to make a change so that another server in my network can access it.

My basic question is how can I set my current server to accept both LOCALHOST and have Remote Access for another server in the same lan...

Any assistance would be appreaciated.

Thanks in advnace

MySQL 5.6 being repeatedly killed for running OOM (1 reply)

I ran into a dead MySQL server on my VPS today.
Whatever it try, it is constantly being killed for allocating 100% of available memory.
The formula I digged up on numerous sources in internet yield reasonable value of 250Mb, but it will allocate a gigabyte in the virtual pool and use anything from 360Mb upward, eventually cause supervisor to kill it.

The formula (in a form of shell file):

#!/bin/sh

mysql -u debian-sys-maint -p"$( grep -Po "(?<=password\s\=\s)\S+" < /etc/mysql/debian.cnf | head -1 )" -e "SELECT ( (
@@key_buffer_size +
@@innodb_buffer_pool_size +
@@innodb_additional_mem_pool_size +
@@innodb_log_buffer_size +
@@max_tmp_tables * IF( @@tmp_table_size > @@max_heap_table_size , @@max_heap_table_size , @@tmp_table_size ) +
@@query_cache_size +
@@myisam_sort_buffer_size * 3 +
@@max_connections * (
@@read_buffer_size +
@@join_buffer_size +
@@read_rnd_buffer_size +
@@thread_stack + (
@@max_allowed_packet * 2
)
) ) / 1024 / 1024 ) AS \`maxmem\`"

Other sources yield anything from 150 to 300Mb for my configuration. Which is a magnitude far off from reality.

This is a 64-bit system.
The current vars/status can be found at rootdir.org/.offload/mysql-stats.txt.gz

As the Oracle Database is necessary to relink the binaries after the OS upgrade. So how about the MySQL Community database? Is it like Oracle database, required to relink the binaries after the OS upgrade? If yes, how to relink MySQL Community Database?
