error 1045 with password (no replies)

this is a really long story but i will try to be as clear as possible. i am actually helping a family member set up a program called collections max. this program says to use mysql and even provides a installation guide. too bad we still have problems.
my family member had everything working but did some updates to comp and now does not work. she gave me a password to use on mysql and as it worked once, i accidentally uninstalled the wrong version of mysql and had to start over. not only did i uninstall mysql using the add/remove program in windows, but i also manually deleted the folder out of program files.
i downloaded 5.1, (is the 6.0 version better??), and according to the collectionsmax tutorial, i select "detailed configuration," then "transactional database," i selected for the C: installation path, i selected "manual setting" at 50 connections, but here's the kicker. it never asks me for a new root password! it always asks me for a current password. i am not sure if it is the 4 letter password that my family member gave me or if it is the long one mysql gave me when i registered. more importantly, is there a way to reset this? then we come to the configuration, collections max say to make sure the "enable strict mode" box is unchecked. i also have an option to add a firewall exception for the tcp number 3306. i checked this. why do i still get the above error???? the two problems that i have had so far is either password related and/or the 1045 error. please help
