Can not start MySQL.. get APPCRASH (no replies)

I am trying to install mysql on a Windows 7 system that I had an older version running before. I uninstalled all the old versions but when I try to start mysql keep getting this error. From the command prompt I enter the mysqld and get the message mysqld.exe has stopped working. The details are:
