MySQL 5.1.50 on RHEL3 - Your MySQL directory '/var/lib/mysql' has more than one PID file: (no replies)

I am trying to install the GS version of MySQL 5.1 on a RHEL3 box that has never had a version of the MySQL database installed.

I constantly receive the following output:

warning: MySQL-server-community-5.1.50-1.rhel3.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 5072e1f5
Your MySQL directory '/var/lib/mysql' has more than one PID file:
ls: /var/lib/mysql/*.pid: No such file or directory
Please check which one (if any) corresponds to a running server
and delete all others before repeating the MySQL upgrade.
error: %pre(MySQL-server-community-5.1.50-1.rhel3) scriptlet failed, exit status 1
error: install: %pre scriptlet failed (2), skipping MySQL-server-community-5.1.50-1.rhel3

Has anyone found a work around for this issue? I know this version of RedHat is old but not out of support yet and I have a legacy application that will not work on more recent versions of RHEL.
