PID file not created (no replies)

I am trying to get MySQL 5.0 started on a Buffalo LinkStation. It has only 256MB RAM installed, but a 1TB HDD.

Version 4.1.23 started OK, but I could not get port 3306 open. I found MySQL5 available so I installed it. The installation went OK untill the last step, when I got

508 /opt/etc # /etc/init.d/mysql start
Starting MySQL. ERROR! Manager of pid-file quit without updating file.

The error file, Nas.err, only has a start and stop entry. NO indication of what the problem is. File and direcory ownerships are root.root, possibly since I insalled it as root. Should I have been mysql?

Any ideas?

Thanks
Jim
