local mac os 10.4 installation, teething... (no replies)

Hi,
just installed from mysql-5.1.53-osx10.4-i686.dmg, with control panel pane,
the control pane says "Could not load MySQL"
(and MediaWiki installer says "Database host:Connection failed")
Reading more, notice I installed to my admin and only acccount (/Users/0) but was supposed to create a user /mysql. Mysql appears to have done this, as if I try to create a user /mysql now, I'm told it already exists but I cant access it.

So can I manage mysql from my admin account - how? - or do I unistal mysql and start again - where's the uninstaller?
