5.1.45 then 5.1.53 on Win XP pro (1 reply)

Really trying hard not get angry at this; I've burned 3 days trying to get this to work.
I'm a professional database programmer and have worked with Sql Server, Oracle, Sqlbase, Pervasive and (back in the day) dBase and Clipper. I can honestly say I have NEVER had the trouble with any of those on ANY operating system that I have with getting MySql installed and running.
First - I had installed 5.1.45 back in March on laptop. I subsequently uninstalled but didn't remove the data out of c:\..application data. I deleted the directory and reinstalled (now.. several times) and I cannot connect. 1045 error. I've deleted the c:\program files\mysql directory and removed mysql three times now. EVERY time I do the installation again, it asks for the old root password (which I don't have) and asks for a new one after it finishes the installation and goes to the config.

I've even made several trips through the registry looking for 'mysql' and found nothing. I've tried to reset the root pwd (through the state-of-the-art-1974 command line) and that doesn't work. For mysql to say that it's the largest and most popular database and have this much trouble JUST GETTING IT UP AND RUNNING is a shame.

I've looked over countless forum postings (Microsoft's forums are much faster) and can't find much I haven't tried. So if all the install directories are wiped, and it's not in the registry, where is it getting the blasted root password on the reinstall??

One question that someone might be able to answer: the 'root' user really has no meaning in Windows. When it's asking for the root pwd, that's not OS related is it? (i.e. network authentication). It's trying to create the 'sysadm' pwd, correct?
