I tried to install the GA release of MySQL 5.5.8 on a Mac running MacOS X 10.6.5. Everything seems ok, but when I start MySQL nothing happens. I tried to start it using both the control panel and the Terminal but the result is the same. The server does not start. The same thing happened with 5.5.6, but I thought that could be a problem with the pre-release version.
I tried also to set a new server instance using Workbench, with no luck. This is the log from Workbench
2010-12-16 16:12:25 - Checked server status: Server is stopped.
2010-12-16 16:12:25 - Starting server...

2010-12-16 16:12:25 - Server start done.

Any suggestion?
