Trouble starting MySQL on Snow Leopard (no replies)

I am new to MySQL and Mac. I have installed MySQL using the DMG to /usr/local where I can see folders for mysql, mysql-5.5.8-osx10.6-x86_64, and mysql-5.1.53-osx10.6-x86_64. I have preferences pane installed, and it says "The MySQL Server Instance is stopped". If I click "Start MySQL Server", nothing happens. If I try to do anything using mysql in the terminal, I get "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)". If I navigate to /tmp, there is no socket. I cannot find it anywhere else. Thanks for any suggestions that you may have!
