I'm not sure if this is a MYSQL problem or a windows problem. Maybe a little of both. Yesterday I installed MySQL 5.1 on my development machine which primarily runs IIS 7. The installer and Instance Configuration Wizard both seemed to run normally. After installation I was able to run several commands from the command line.
Finally, I shut the machine down and went to bed. Next morning I wanted to start building some databases. I installed phpMyAdmin and SQLyog but the MySQL service rejected the passwords I had assigned and which had worked last night and couldn't be started. I uninstalled and reinstalled it several times but it wouldn't work. I even uinstalled both MySQL and IIS 7 and reinstalled them both but no joy. Now, even though it is uninstalled and the folder has been deleted, it still shows up as a Windows service, albeit one that is stopped. The path for the MySQL executable in the service list is shown as "C:\Program Files\MYSQL\MYSQL SERVER 5.1\BIN\MYSQLD" but that folder, path and executable no longer exist as I have deleted them. However, that entry seems to be preventing me from making MySQL install and function correctly. I have no idea where the reference is being picked up from or how to clear it. I searched through the registry but couldn't find it. Any ideas would be appreciated.
