But in that thread I didn't see any solution to the problem of the topic, and strange for me is that that thread was closed (don't know why), so here I re-open this Topic for people who might encounter the same problem.
Yes, I had the same problem during re-installation of the MySQL 5.1 server on my windows XP machine today, and it caused me some headache (2 hours figuring out why it can not start the service during installation), so here I post the solution.
Solution:
Before you re-install MySQL 5.1, make sure:
1. the MySQL Windows service is deleted
2. run regedit (or regedit32), find all old MySQL stuff then delete them.
3. Stop Windows Firewall service
4. MOST IMPORTANT: you must delete following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MySQL
Then start re-install, it should work now.
