Installing on Xserve 10.4 - Cant' start MySQL server... (1 reply)

I am an admitted newbie. I don't deal with MySQL that often although I have successfully installed it in the past. I have run the binary package installer on an Xserve running Mac OS X Server.

After running the installer, I went to /usr/local/ and there are two directories: mysql and mysql-5.1.51-osx10.4-i686.

I am now attempting to start the server. I am doing so by trying to run /usr/local/mysql-5.1.51-osx10.4-i686/bin/mysqld_safe. Doing this produces the following error message:

101028 09:46:27 mysqld_safe Logging to '/usr/local/mysql/data/newnan.com.err'.
101028 09:46:27 mysqld_safe The file /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld
does not exist or is not executable. Please cd to the mysql installation
directory and restart this script from there as follows:
./bin/mysqld_safe&
See http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/mysqld-safe.html for more information

I have been trying to work thru this for 2 days and I'm now stuck. Can anybody assist me as to what I'm doing wrong? I have tried everything I can think of but can't seem to get the server to start up. Thanks for any help you guys can offer me.
