ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) (5 replies)

hi all

theres a whole bunch of fixes for all over the net, but, they are for windows :(
i gave up on them a couple years ago.

im trying to set up this server i have thats running ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
(and im still a newbie at ubuntu.)
i have installed apache 2.2.14-5 and php 5.3.2-1.
i did some quick checks i found online to see that they both work.
installed mysql-server 5.1.41-3.
in root terminal, i type "mysql" and get the dreaded error message.
"ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)"
this has been aggravating me for about a week now.

can someone PLEASE help me?

New Server: dual P3-450, 1gig ram, 4 * 40gig IDE HD, 2 * 80gig SCSI3, dvd-rw.
Laptop : P3-1.1G, 1gig ram, 40gig HD, dvd-rom.
Gamer : P4-3.2G, 4gig ram, 2 * 360gig IDE HD, 1TB Ext USB HD, dvd-rw.
Old Server: celeron 850, 256meg ram, 40gig HD, dvd-rom, (this was only set up for the windows shares on the local network)
