cannot set initial password (no replies)

I'm trying to use "mysqladmin" and "mysql_secure_installation" to set the root password. It asks me for a password and pressing enter just fails. I have not set a password, yet. Could this be because I configured "/etc/mysql/my.cnf" to allow connections to port 3306 from the LAN? This is for version 5.1.49.
